Travel: Why do people need ice machines in hotels?

Many / most hotels & motels have ice machines, right? I just came across mention of a hotel that didn't have an ice machine, and a guest complained. What are the ice machines for? I don't need ice when I'm at home. Why would I need ice when I'm staying in a hotel?
